Why Diets Fail

Diets fail because they ignore the conditioned, compulsive need to eat in certain situations. So diets require constant will power to maintain and at some point the compulsive “need to eat” overcomes the will power.

So even if you lose weight on these programs, it’s very hard to keep it off because the conditioning that drove you to overeat in the first place is still there. You may fight against it and win for a while, but most people tire of this fight and then give in. Sound familiar?

One day that extra piece of chocolate cake you know you shouldn’t have becomes irresistible. You slip up once, then twice… and after a string of slip-ups you’re off your diet.

If this has happened to you, you may have wondered, “Will I ever be able to lose this weight and keep it off?”

The answer is, yes, you can. But you’ve got to come at the problem from an entirely different angle.

Imagine how much easier it will be to lose weight when you eliminate the compulsive need to eat for emotional reasons. Imagine only eating when you’re truly hungry and stopping when you’re full.

After the first week, I noticed that the half gallon of chocolate brownie chunk ice cream sat undisturbed except for one scoop one evening. I thought about it at other times, but didn't feel that familiar "pull"...as if the food is calling to me. I've hit the snack cabinet just once in two weeks and had just a few crackers. At dinner last night, I kept stopping early in each course (we had fondue) rather than continue eating just because others were. I finished dinner without feeling either deprived or too full. Often, when I have a really special dinner like last night, it seems to push me to eat more sweets the next day.

I ate very few appetizers last night even though the party was difficult for me [because I didn’t know most of the people there] and I felt left out. In the face of that, I put forth the effort and ended up getting to know people and had some great conversations. The discomfort at the party did not lead me to eat!!!!!!!

How Conditioning Got You Fat and How De-conditioning Can Set You Free

Overeating has one primary cause: a unique type of conditioning that appears to only apply to eating.

This conditioning starts in one of two ways. The first and most common is when you have some negative feeling or experience and then just happen to eat and experience a pleasurable distraction. After (unconsciously) noticing many times that eating provides a pleasurable distraction in that situation, you get conditioned to eat whenever that situation “triggers” you in the future. Examples include when bored, lonely, experiencing negative feelings, and when feeling rejected.

The second way this happens is when you want a “reward,” such as wanting to feel good or comfortable, or to celebrate.

I call this process “conditioning” because the behavior (eating) is experienced as compulsive, as driven. Eating happens automatically and requires considerable will power to stop.

When you get rid of the “trigger” and “reward” conditioning that causes emotional eating you’ll find that you only eat when hungry. And this permanent change to your eating behavior will last because it’s not based on will power. It’s based on having eliminated the conditioning that had you gain excess weight in the first place.

How I Discovered The Inner Secrets To Weight Loss

For many years it's been my dream to give people a method that will allow them to stop any negative or undesirable behavior in their life. And when it came to most behaviors I was successful at helping people change about 90% of the time.

My colleagues and I have helped thousands of people beat procrastination, stop uncontrollable anger and the fear of anger, improve confidence, end the failure to speak up and express themselves, overcome the inability to make friends, or have nurturing and exciting romantic relationships, and more.

After that success story I tried the same approach with other clients. They identified all the situations in which they ate for emotional reasons and then eliminated the conditionings that caused each of those. At this point our clients have identified over 21 triggers and five rewards. Not every client has all of them, but most clients have a total of from 15 to 20 of them. Here is a list of some of the most common.

Rewards

  • Eating to reward myself when I feel no one else or nothing else will.
  • Eating to feel good, comforted, happy, secure, centered, at home.
  • Eating to give myself pleasure.
  • Eating to celebrate.

Triggers

  • Eating when I’m nervous.
  • Eating when I’m bored.
  • Eating when I’m lonely.
  • Eating when depressed.
  • Eating when stressed.
  • Eating when feeling unlovable.
  • Eating when anxious, angry, upset, sad, etc.
  • Eating when feeling needy.
  • Eating when feeling rejected.

When I looked at the above list I realized they all fell into two patterns: eating to … and eating when….

Eating to… is to achieve a reward, such as eating to celebrate.

Eating when… is a trigger, an event that causes you to eat, such as eating when feeling anxious.

So most overeating is the result of a connection you made between eating and specific triggers or rewards. In other words, eating has been conditioned to compulsively make you eat even when you aren’t hungry.

Now you know the secret that few others know. Now you know why you eat when you aren’t hungry and why you can’t stop yourself from eating. Now you know why it is so hard to stay on a diet. Now you know why it isn’t your “fault” when you go off your diet: conditioned compulsive behavior will almost always win over will power in the long run.

When my clients did all the necessary de-conditioning, their old triggers and rewards no longer led to compulsive eating in those situations. For good. (In a few cases some beliefs are involved and are very easy to handle with my belief process.)

It has definitely worked. All cravings and unnecessary eating are gone. I’m watching what I eat and am even counting calories. Thanks to our work, it’s been easy to stay at around 1500 calories.
